How to Prepare Your Wall Before Installing Wallpaper

How to Prepare Your Wall Before Installing Wallpaper

How to Prepare Your Wall Before Installing Wallpaper

Wallpaper can completely transform a room, but the final result depends on more than just the design you choose. One of the most important steps is preparing your wall properly before installation.

A beautiful wallpaper can only perform well if the wall underneath is clean, smooth, dry and suitable for wallpaper. Poor wall preparation can lead to lifting edges, bubbling, weak adhesion, visible imperfections or problems during installation.

Whether you are installing peel and stick wallpaper, paste the wall wallpaper or a custom wall mural, taking the time to prepare your wall correctly can make a big difference to the final result.

Why Wall Preparation Matters

Wallpaper sits directly on the wall surface, so anything underneath can affect how it looks and how well it holds.

Dust, grease, fresh paint, texture, moisture, mould, old adhesive, wall damage or unsuitable paint can all create problems. Even small imperfections can become more noticeable once wallpaper is installed, especially with lighter designs or smooth finishes.

Proper wall preparation helps with:

  • Better adhesion
  • Smoother installation
  • Cleaner panel alignment
  • Reduced bubbling
  • Better long-term performance
  • A more professional final finish
  • Fewer installation issues

Before ordering or installing wallpaper, it is worth checking the condition of your wall carefully.

Start With a Smooth Wall

Wallpaper works best on smooth, flat walls. If your wall has texture, bumps, dents, cracks or old paint flakes, these should be fixed before installation.

Wallpaper will not hide every imperfection. In many cases, the wallpaper may make uneven areas more visible because the material follows the shape of the wall underneath.

Before installing wallpaper, check for:

  • Cracks
  • Holes
  • Uneven plaster
  • Flaking paint
  • Rough patches
  • Old adhesive
  • Wall texture
  • Raised paint lines
  • Loose plaster or render

If needed, patch the wall, sand it smooth and make sure the surface is even before moving forward.

Clean the Wall Properly

A wall may look clean, but it can still have dust, oil, grease or residue on the surface. This is especially common in kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, children’s rooms and high-touch areas.

Before installing wallpaper, clean the wall with a suitable mild cleaner and allow it to dry completely.

Pay special attention to areas that may have:

  • Cooking residue
  • Dust
  • Hand marks
  • Grease
  • Crayon or pencil marks
  • Makeup
  • Smoke residue
  • Cleaning product residue
  • Old adhesive

The wall should be clean, dry and free from anything that could interfere with adhesion.

Make Sure the Wall Is Completely Dry

Moisture is one of the biggest enemies of wallpaper.

Do not install wallpaper on damp walls, walls with water damage or areas where moisture is still present. If there is mould, bubbling paint or signs of water leaks, the source of the moisture needs to be fixed before wallpaper is installed.

Wallpaper should not be used to cover an active moisture problem.

Before installing, check for:

  • Damp patches
  • Mould
  • Peeling paint
  • Bubbling paint
  • Water stains
  • Musty smell
  • Soft plaster
  • Recent leak repairs

If there has been water damage, repair the issue first and allow the wall to dry properly before preparing it for wallpaper.

Prime the Wall Before Wallpaper Installation

Primer is one of the most important parts of wall preparation.

A properly primed wall creates a more suitable surface for wallpaper and helps reduce issues caused by porous plaster, drywall compound, patched areas or uneven paint absorption.

For the best result, Kaleon Wallpaper recommends using at least one coat of primer, followed by a suitable acrylic-based or water-based paint layer where required. This is especially important on new plasterboard, patched walls, bare plaster, repaired surfaces or walls with inconsistent finishes.

Primer helps create a more stable surface and can improve the way wallpaper adheres to the wall.

Allow Fresh Paint to Cure

Freshly painted walls need time before wallpaper is installed.

Even if paint feels dry to the touch, it may not be fully cured. Installing wallpaper too soon over fresh paint can cause adhesion problems, peeling, bubbling or paint damage during installation.

As a general recommendation, allow freshly painted walls to cure for at least two weeks before installing wallpaper.

This is especially important for peel and stick wallpaper because self-adhesive materials rely heavily on the condition of the painted surface.

Be Careful With Washable, Stain-Resistant or Teflon Paints

Some modern paints are designed to resist stains, moisture, marks and adhesives. While this can be useful for everyday cleaning, it can create problems for wallpaper adhesion.

Washable, stain-resistant, low-stick, Teflon-style or highly glossy paints may prevent wallpaper from bonding properly to the wall.

If your wall has this type of paint, extra preparation may be required. In uncertain cases, using a suitable wallpaper preparation product can help create a better surface before installation.

If you are unsure about your wall paint, it is better to ask before installing.

Check the Wall Colour Before Installing Light Wallpaper

Wall colour can sometimes affect the final appearance of lighter wallpaper designs.

If the wall underneath is very dark, patchy, heavily marked or uneven in colour, it may show through slightly depending on the wallpaper material and design. This is especially relevant for soft neutral, white, pastel or light-coloured wallpapers.

For the best finish, the wall should have an even, light-coloured base before installation.

This helps the wallpaper look cleaner and more consistent once installed.

Remove Old Wallpaper Properly

If your wall already has wallpaper, it should usually be removed before installing new wallpaper.

Installing wallpaper over old wallpaper can create problems because the existing layer may not be stable. It can lift, bubble or create an uneven surface underneath the new wallpaper.

After removing old wallpaper, make sure to:

  • Remove leftover adhesive
  • Wash the wall
  • Repair any wall damage
  • Sand rough areas
  • Prime the wall
  • Allow the surface to dry completely

The goal is to create a fresh, stable surface before installing the new wallpaper.

Prepare Differently for Peel and Stick Wallpaper

Peel and stick wallpaper is self-adhesive, so wall preparation is extremely important.

The wall needs to be smooth, clean, dry and properly painted. Dust, texture, fresh paint, poor paint quality or unsuitable coatings can all affect how well peel and stick wallpaper adheres.

Peel and stick wallpaper works best on:

  • Smooth walls
  • Clean painted surfaces
  • Fully cured paint
  • Properly primed walls
  • Dry interior spaces
  • Walls without texture or loose paint

It may not perform well on rough, dusty, textured, damp or freshly painted walls.

Prepare Properly for Paste the Wall Wallpaper

Paste the wall wallpaper also needs a clean and stable surface, but the installation method is different.

For this material, adhesive is applied to the wall rather than the back of the wallpaper. This makes wall preparation just as important, especially for long-term interiors and professional installations.

A smooth, primed and properly prepared wall helps the paste bond evenly and allows the wallpaper panels to sit cleanly on the surface.

Paste the wall wallpaper is often preferred for:

  • Long-term homes
  • Feature walls
  • Living rooms
  • Bedrooms
  • Commercial interiors
  • Designer projects
  • Professional installations

Do Not Rush the Preparation Stage

Wall preparation is not the exciting part of wallpaper installation, but it is one of the most important parts.

Rushing this stage can cause problems later. Taking extra time to clean, repair, prime and check the wall can save time, money and frustration during installation.

Before installing wallpaper, make sure:

  • The wall is smooth
  • The wall is clean
  • The wall is dry
  • Paint has fully cured
  • Any mould or moisture issue has been fixed
  • Old wallpaper and adhesive have been removed
  • The surface has been primed where needed
  • The wall is suitable for the chosen wallpaper material

Check Your Wallpaper Before Installing

Before you start installing, unpack your wallpaper and check all panels carefully.

Make sure the design, material, panel numbers and measurements are correct. It is also helpful to lay the panels out in order before starting so you understand how the design connects.

For custom printed wallpaper and murals, checking the panels before installation is an important step.

Do this before applying any panel to the wall.

Final Wall Preparation Checklist

Before installing wallpaper, use this simple checklist:

  • Repair holes, cracks and dents
  • Sand rough or uneven areas
  • Remove old wallpaper and adhesive
  • Clean the wall properly
  • Remove dust, grease and residue
  • Make sure the wall is completely dry
  • Fix any moisture or mould issues
  • Prime the wall if needed
  • Use a suitable painted surface
  • Allow fresh paint to cure for at least two weeks
  • Avoid installing over unsuitable washable or Teflon-style paints
  • Check all wallpaper panels before installation

A well-prepared wall gives your wallpaper the best chance to look beautiful and perform properly.
